SUMMER - Pitta season

Colorful, sweet fruits and vegetables and herbs are in abundance this season.

WHAT AYURVEDA RECOMMENDS

In Ayurveda, the Pitta season typically corresponds to the hot and intense months of summer. During this time, Pitta dosha tends to become aggravated, leading to symptoms such as inflammation, acidity, irritability, and overheating. To balance Pitta dosha during the summer months, Ayurveda recommends incorporating cooling, hydrating, and calming foods into the diet.

Here are some dietary guidelines for Pitta season:

  1. Cooling Foods: Favor foods that have a cooling effect on the body to counteract the heat of Pitta season. This includes fruits such as watermelon, cucumber, coconut, mango, and pomegranate, as well as vegetables like leafy greens, cilantro, celery, and zucchini.

  2. Sweet and Bitter Tastes: Emphasize sweet, bitter, and astringent tastes in the diet to help pacify Pitta dosha. Sweet foods such as ripe fruits, grains, and dairy products provide a nourishing and grounding effect, while bitter and astringent foods like leafy greens, bitter gourd, and green beans help to cool and detoxify the body.

  3. Hydration: Stay well-hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day to help maintain balance and prevent dehydration. In addition to water, you can also enjoy cooling beverages such as coconut water, cucumber juice, mint tea, and diluted fruit juices.

  4. Light and Refreshing Meals: Opt for light, refreshing meals that are easy to digest and provide sustained energy without overheating the body. This may include salads, raw or lightly cooked vegetables, steamed grains, and cooling soups or smoothies.

  5. Moderate Spices: While Pitta season calls for cooling foods, you can still enjoy flavorful spices in moderation. Opt for cooling spices such as coriander, fennel, cardamom, mint, and cilantro, while reducing or avoiding hot and pungent spices like chili peppers, garlic, and mustard.

  6. Avoid Excessive Heat: Minimize consumption of hot, spicy, and oily foods as they can exacerbate Pitta imbalances. This includes fried foods, spicy curries, red meat, alcohol, and caffeine.

  7. Regular Meal Times: Stick to regular meal times and avoid skipping meals, as irregular eating habits can aggravate Pitta dosha. Aim for balanced meals that include a variety of food groups to ensure adequate nutrition and support digestion.
