Ayurvedic Chai Tea

In Ayurveda, tea is a wonderful remedy for dosha balancing. In particular, people who are considered a Kapha type or have a Kapha imbalance can benefit greatly from a cup of Kapha balancing tea such as chai due to its heating spice blend.

Kapha, and the spring season - known as Kapha Season- is known to carry a certain heaviness that can create a lot of stagnant feelings and sensations in both the inner and the outer environment. While we begin to see warmer days, we are mostly surrounded by a cool crisp air that can create target our immune system. For us to balance and stay vital, we must invite stimulation, activity, and heat!

I invite you to try this delicious Chai tea recipe , not only to feel warmer, but to experience a boost in energy by stimulating your digestive and immune system this spring!

Doshic Notes
Balancing for all three doshas.

Serves 4

INGREDIENTS

  • 3 cups water

  • 4 cloves

  • 2 pinches nutmeg, ground

  • 2 pinches cinnamon, ground

  • 2 pinches cardamom, ground

  • 1/2 inch piece of fresh ginger, chopped fine

  • 1 tsp black tea

  • 1 cup plant-based milk (Almond or rice recommended for Kapha balancing purposes)

  • 2 tsp honey or light sweetener

PREPARATION

  1. Boil the water with the spices for 2 minutes.

  2. Add the tea and simmer for 2 minutes.

  3. Add the milk and heat until hot but not boiling. 

  4. Add sweetener, bless, say a prayer, serve and ENJOY!

Note: You may vary the amounts of milk and sugar according to taste and dosha. Of course, increasing milk and / or sugar can provoke kapha, so during this spring season, keep things to a minimum!

If you use caffeinated tea, the cardamom will help neutralize the effects of the caffeine. (Great for Pitta constitution)
